Words Matter.... Period

Our thoughts – whether positive or negative – are the building blocks that shape our lives. Many believe that our circumstances are determined by what goes on around us, but Scripture reveals that, often times, our circumstances unfold from what develops within us. Proverbs 23:7 states, "For as he [a person] thinks within himself, so he is" (NASB translation).

When my son was a small child through high school I would write down his best attributes on sticky notes and place them all over his bathroom mirror. YOU are amazing. YOU are strong. YOU are honest etc. Each morning I would tell him to read them aloud and repeat them to himself but change the verbiage to I AM. While brushing his teeth I could hear from the hallway, I AM Resilient. I AM made in the image of God. This world can be cruel sometimes. It can beat you up and tell you to believe things about yourself that will leave you feeling defeated. I did this activity with my son all of the time because I wanted him to know how I see him and more importantly, how God created him so that he could see himself in HIS image. I wanted him to be confident in who he was so that he would never accept anyone making him feel less than. Now that he is older we share our affirmations through text messages LOL.

James Allen, author of As a Man Thinketh, wrote: "All that you accomplish or fail to accomplish with your life is the direct result of your thoughts. You are today where your thoughts have brought you; you will be tomorrow where your thoughts take you."

When was the last time you evaluated your thoughts? Do your thoughts reflect who you want to be, or do they mirror a person you’d rather leave behind?

What we need to remember is that we must "be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal" of our mind (Romans 12:2, AMP). This includes replacing negative patterns of thinking that stem from our upbringing and life experiences – it involves exchanging our faulty reasoning for the higher thoughts.

We are, today, where our thoughts have brought us – but we can be, tomorrow, where our thoughts and expectations take us. So where will yours lead?

For the next 21 days, I challenge you to try using affirmations everyday to transform your mindset and light your own way. Why 21 days? Well, because we've all been told that anything you do repetitively 21 times becomes a habit. Here is a list to help get you started.
